Find the intersection of highways 76/123 and 76/123-Business (130). Drive south on 76/130-Business 1.2 miles south until you come to Walnut Street. Drive south 6.6 miles south on Walnut Street (changes into Friendship Road) 1.5 miles past the New Hepsibah Church. Latitude N34 37.111 x Longitude W 82 53.370 CHURCH/CEMETERY HISTORY: ------------------------ Cemetery acreage included in parent tract acquired from H.J. Hare and Willie R. Hare by warranty deed dated 8-Jan-1959. Corps of Engineers contract Z-2616-C. Latitude N 34 38.923 x Longitude W 82 53.075 (estimate) The cemetery area is now being destroyed by large falling dead trees and scrub brush. It's obvious that no attempt has been made to maintain this area. However, the Hepsibah Baptist Church cemetery area just to the right of this area, seems to be well maintained. When the undertaker re-interred the graves, they used common funeral home metal stake markers at each grave location. It's assumed that they used a typed paper card in each stake holder, since they are now gone - a few stakes have stamped metal cards in them. It's doubtful that living relatives of these pioneers, could ever determine where their family members are buried. o----------o Posted by: Jim Baldwin Date: January 13, 2002 at 17:01:33 In Reply to: Re: The YOW Family - North Carolina by Dalwayne Caradine of 259 Ref. To your ancestor Thomas Caradine and my ancestor Isaac Baldwin I have records from the Army Corps of Engineers about the removal of the graves. They were moved from Martins Creek to the Old Hepsibah Baptist Church Cemetery on Friendship Rd below Seneca, SC. I had recently had a marker placed there. I've been to the old grave site the property is still owned by a distant cousin. The property is grown up in trees now. There did not appear to be any valid reason to move this cemetery as the waters from Hartwell Lake did not cover this area. I'm told that it was in the inside boundary as outlined by the Corps of Engineers. o----------o Posted by: Dalwayne Caradine Date: November 06, 2001 at 19:05:08 In Reply to: Re: The YOW Family - North Carolina by Jim Baldwin of 259 Do you have any further information on the Cemeteries located on Martins Creek. Thomas Caradine was my ancestor I have been trying to locate pictures of the cemetery before they were moved for Hartwell Lake. Any further information would be appreciated. By: Jim Baldwin o----------o John, thanks for the information. I found in my cousins notes, the late Dr. Wofford Baldwin, MD that Mary Elizabeth Baldwin Married Richard Dempsey Yow. You are right they had no children as far as we know. I did find a John B. Yow buried in the old Martin Creek Cemetery near Clemson University ,Seneca SC. These graves were removed in 1961 by the Army Corps of Engineers when Hartwell Lake was filled. Mary was a sister to my ancestorial grandfather Isaac Baldwin who lived on Martins Creek, according to the land platts their property joined each other. The Yows have long since left this area, I know a lot of them ended up in Stephens county Ga. where they were very prominent serving in various public offices and owned vast amounts of property. Im told they originated in Holland. There is a history book by Trogdon "The History of Stephens County, Ga." that tells quite a bit about the Yows. Thanks for the reply this helps confirm what I had learned earlier.
